IRS Free File: File for a Tax Extension

Automatic Extension for Individual Tax Filers

Eligibility and Filing Process

All individual tax filers, regardless of income, can use the IRS Free File service to electronically request an automatic six-month extension to file their taxes. This extension applies to Form 1040, the standard federal income tax return form.

To file for an extension, individuals can use IRS Form 4868, Application for Automatic Extension of Time To File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return. This form can be filed online or by mail.

Filing Online: Filing online is the recommended method, as it is more convenient and secure. Individuals can visit the IRS website (www.irs.gov/freefile) to access the Free File system.

Filing by Mail: Individuals can mail the completed Form 4868 to the IRS address indicated on the form. It's important to note that mailing the form does not constitute filing the actual tax return.

Deadline: The deadline to file for an extension is the same as the tax filing deadline, which is typically April 15. However, extensions can extend this deadline to October 15.

By using the IRS Free File service, individual tax filers can easily and conveniently request an automatic extension, ensuring they have sufficient time to gather the necessary documents and prepare their tax returns accurately.
